Bahamians in Rio: Bahamas-14th on Medal Standings

By Clayton Clarke

RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil: (Sunday, August, 21): Team Bahamas finished 14th on the medal standings at the completion of Athletics earlier today with two medals (one gold, one bronze). Leading the way for Bahamas was Shaunae Miller who won the women’s 400m gold (49.44pb) in dramatic style to capture the country’s fifth gold in Athletics and sixth overall for The Bahamas. Durward Knowles and Cecil Cooke won the first (and only non-athletics) gold in 1964 in the Sailing (Star Class).

The men’s 4x400m (Chris Brown, Stephen Newbold, Alonzo Russell, Michael, Mathieu, Steven Gardiner) secured bronze in the men’s 4x400m, the fourth medal in the event for The Bahamas. The medals won in Rio brings the tally in Athletics to 12 (5 gold, 2 silver, 5 bronze) and the country’s overall total to 14. The other two medals were won in Sailing (Star class).

Pedrya Seymour and Donald Thomas were finalists. Seymour was sixth in the women’s 100m finals (12.76) after setting a national record of 12.64 in the semifinals. She is the first Bahamian to qualify for a sprint hurdles finals at the Olympics. Thomas was seventh in the men’s jump finals (2.29). Trevor Barry finished outside of the top eight in 11th (2.25m).

Tynia Gaither (women’s 200m) and Steven Gardiner (men’s 400m) advanced to the semi-finals in their events.

The women’s 4x400m team (Lanece Clarke, Anthonique Strachan, Carmeisha Cox and Christine Amertil) competed for the first time at the Olympic level and came away with a national record of 3:26.36.
